Dee Soukup, science teacher at Bernard Campbell Middle School, received the Howard Gadberry Teacher Award during a special ceremony March 26 at the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair.
The Howard Gadberry Award is designed to recognize teachers in fourth through 12th grades who show outstanding effort toward the motivation of students in scientific exploration. The award is given annually by Science Pioneers at the annual Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair Awards Ceremony.
Sixteen of Mrs. Soukup’s advanced studies science students at Campbell Middle School entered projects in the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair. Many earned Gold Level Achievement, the highest level of achievement attainable, Mrs. Soukup said.
Kaleigh Shirley, one of Mrs. Soukup’s advanced studies students, was also awarded a Special Award – the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering and Technology Award for her project, The Effect of Different Roofing Materials on the Wind Resistance. Her project was selected for display in the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology through May. Staff from Linda Hall Library chose projects for display based on scientific content, unique approaches to problem solving and visual composition. The students competing ranged in age from fourth graders to high school.
The projects on display at the Linda Hall Library are indicative of scientific curiosity, good understanding of the scientific process, and visually arresting, added officials from the library.
