On Wednesday, March 09, 2011, at 5:44 p.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1405 SW Charleston Avenue. The occupant of the house reported smoke coming from the attic.

When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke was visible from the two-story, single family residence. The occupant was outside of the house.

Firefighters initially attacked the fire in the attic from inside until structural conditions worsened, pushing them into a defensive attack from outside. After an initial knock down of the fire and a partial collapse of the roof, crews were able to re-enter the structure where it was safe to do so, for final extinguishment. The fire was reported out at 8:09 p.m.

The fire is believed to have originated in the attic and quickly spread throughout the attic and into two upstairs bedrooms, causing extensive damage to much the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
