Lee’s Summit North High School students and staff recently completed the school’s annual food drive for Lee’s Summit Social Services. The effort is conducted through the school’s BEST (Broncos Establishing Strong Ties) mentoring groups, and donated items filled two school buses.

LSNHS students deliver items collected through the school's annual fund drive to Lee's Summit Social Services Nov. 17.

The school’s mentoring groups compete against other, and the group collecting the most food during the first week is rewarded with the opportunity to deliver the food to Lee’s Summit Social Services. Teacher Tavish Whiting’s senior group collected more than 38 food items per person and participated in the delivery Nov. 17.

Other BEST groups with the most items donated per person by grade level were Collene Akard (freshmen), Joanne Waers (sophomore) and Sarah Graff (junior).

LSNHS has participated in the November food drive since the school opened in 1995, and it has grown tremendously over the years. This year’s collection was the school’s largest ever and will help Lee’s Summit Social Services serve its clients this fall.

Lee’s Summit North is among a number of R-7 schools conducting food drives and other charitable efforts during the school year. Through the efforts of school-wide and school organization fundraisers and community-service projects, students learn lessons about generosity and caring while helping their community.
