Missouri’s largest consignment event, Just Between Friends, continues to grow

Continuing improvements and a sluggish economy have helped to make the Lee’s Summit Just Between Friends consignment sale the largest children’s consignment event in Missouri. The sale, which features children’s and maternity merchandise from more than 500 local consignors, will be held August 29 through September 1 at the John Knox Village Pavilion.
“We work really hard to listen to the suggestions of our consignors and shoppers and make the sale the best possible experience for everyone involved,” said Amber Post, owner of the Lee’s Summit franchise. “One of the most anticipated changes for this fall is the distribution of consignor proceed checks at the end of the sale, rather than having to wait two weeks to receive their money in the mail.”
Shoppers can expect to find thousands of quality new and used children’s and maternity items at the fall event, including fall and winter clothing, Halloween costumes, toys, books, furniture, baby equipment, software and electronics, and bicycles. Items are inspected to ensure a high standard of quality and to maintain the right balance of items available for purchase. Consignors are encouraged to make use of two different drop-off times over the course of the sale to ensure that new merchandise is always available.
“A lot of shoppers plan to come on one of the last two days of the sale, when most items are an additional 25% or 50% off the tagged price. We even have shoppers who come every day to make sure they don’t miss out on a new bargain!” said Post.
The sale is stocked through consignors who price their own merchandise and earn between 65-75% of the sales price for each item sold. The average consignor check at the spring sale was $370.
Greenwood mother and returning consignor Kristina Brown really appreciates the professionalism of the sale. “I love the open feel of the Pavilion and everything is very organized and easy-to-find. Clothing racks are spacious and with so much selection that I actually got tired of looking through the sizes I needed at the spring sale,” said Brown.
In addition to benefiting the bottom line of local families, the Lee’s Summit JBF sale partners with several local non-profit organizations to contribute money and donated clothing and baby care items. Unsold items donated by local families are donated to Midwest Foster Care and Adoption Association and Baby Grace, a local non-profit that mentors teenage mothers.
For the first time, JBF is partnering with HappyBottoms to host a diaper drive at the sale that will benefit low-income families whose government subsidies do not include reimbursement or aid for diaper purchases. Shoppers at the first public day of the sale, Sunday, August 29, will be asked to give $2 or at least 5 diapers for entrance to the sale. Shoppers donating diapers will be entered in a drawing for door prizes.
Additional activities are planned for Sunday, including a “Babies of JBF” photography session from 1-4 pm, during which group and individual baby pictures will be taken for a promotional collage. Beth Searcy from Photography by Beth will be donating her services for the group pictures.
