The University of Missouri MO-Ag Theatre will be incorporating a new health-focused theme at this year’s Missouri State Fair, offering free health services to fairgoers throughout the 11-day expo. University of Missouri Health Care (UMHC) will be providing everything from advice from experts to skin cancer screenings, all at no charge.

“The services offered through the MO-Ag Theater this year will significantly enhance the value of the Fair experience,” said Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. “This opportunity will provide fairgoers access to medical professionals to ask questions and receive screenings at no cost.”

Experts from UMHC will be available several days during the Fair including Thursday, August 12, with the George D. Peak Memorial Burn and Wound Center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Staff from Pediatric Hematology/Oncology will be in the building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, August 13. UMHC will offer a free skin cancer screening Monday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Tuesday, August 17, the building will feature UMHC Emergency Services along with the Central Missouri Emergency Nurses Association. Wednesday, August 18, the Adult Falls Prevention Health Fair including the Show-Me Falls Free Missouri Coalition will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  A complete building schedule is available online at www.mostatefair.com/MO-Ag-Theatre.php.

Other services offered at the 2010 Fair will include the Missouri Farm Bureau Building featuring agricultural exhibits, market updates and weather exhibits from industry leaders. Ice cold milk will be on sale for 25¢ and registration to win a John Deere lawn tractor will take place throughout the 11-day Fair. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 16, to celebrate the building’s recent remodel.

The Missouri Electric Cooperatives (MEC) Building will feature experts on energy-related topics as well as ways to conserve resources and how to incorporate new trends. Additionally, many hands-on exhibits will educate and entertain visitors of all ages including photo opportunities with MEC character Buddy Bear.  On MEC Day, Friday, August 20, one free CFL light bulb per person will be available, while supplies last.

All three buildings are part of the Rural Lifestyles Showcase at the Missouri State Fair, themed this year “Something for Everyone!” The showcase will feature traditional exhibits as well as new and relevant displays located in 15 buildings along with several outdoor exhibition areas on the 396-acre fairground. The entire Showcase is included in regular Fair admission with a topic list available online.

The Missouri State Fair is “Growing Great Memories” August 12 to 22 in Sedalia. The showcase along with public camping facilities and a variety of free entertainment help make the Fair an affordable and memorable experience for all Missourians. Visit mostatefair.com for more information.
