This Week in Jefferson City

The Governor called the General Assembly into Special Session to pass two bills: (1) a bill providing $150 Million to Ford Motor Company; and (2) a bill changing the Missouri State Pension Plan for state employees.

I believe Missouri should have a different strategy for creating jobs. I support a tax cut for every business in Missouri – if we make Missouri a better state to do business for every business, then we can increase jobs in every single area of the state. I believe this strategy is the fairest and most efficient way to increase jobs in our state. I don’t think state leaders should pick and choose which businesses get state aid, and which businesses do not get state aid. Also, I was very concerned that Ford Motor Company would not make a commitment to our state even if we pass this bill. I believed my idea would have created new jobs and allowed us to keep the Ford Plant. I shared my concerns with the Governor, and asked him to include a tax cut for every business in his special session call – he declined my request. The Ford bill passed the General Assembly today.

I supported the changes to the Missouri State Pension Plan bill. The state pension system is very underfunded, and requires hundreds of millions of tax dollars every year. This bill requires future state employees to contribute a small percentage of their salary to the pension fund, and changes retirement dates to match private industry retirement dates. This bill will save the state hundreds of millions of dollars in the future. This bill passed the House today, and will likely pass the Senate later today.

The Special Session is now complete – I hope to see you soon!
