Posted by GSDispatch Editor in by MoDOT, GSD Online
I-435 will close to all traffic July 10 so crews can remove Route 40 Bridge
Interstate 435 will be closed between 23rd Street and I-70 for up to 53 hours the weekend following the Independence Day holiday to remove the Route 40 bridge over I-435. Beginning 12:01 in the morning Saturday, July 10, northbound and southbound I-435 will be closed to all traffic until 5 a.m. Monday, July 12.
Intermittent lanes of both northbound and southbound I-435 at Route 40 will be closed at times to prepare for demolition. Motorists should expect various lane closures from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, July 9.
Also, the westbound ramp from I-70 to northbound I-435 and the eastbound ramp from I-70 to northbound I-435 will close at various times beginning 10 p.m. Friday, July 9, through 5 a.m. Monday, July 12
Through traffic on southbound I-435 will be diverted to I-35. Through traffic on northbound I-435 will be diverted to westbound I-70 and northbound I-35. Message boards, detour signs and Kansas City Scout message boards will direct motorists during the closure.
Bridge Goes Out with a Bang
Beginning early Saturday, a precise series of charges will take down the 290-foot-long concrete box girder bridge. Once razed, the debris will be removed quickly so I-435 can be re-opened as soon as possible. Contractors do not anticipate removing the debris will required all of the 53-hour closure window.
MoDOT and contractor Clarkson Construction Co. are taking advantage of this weekend, with the Kansas City Royals out of town, to remove the Route 40 bridge. A new bridge will be built and re-open in early October. Route 40 will be open to local traffic until the bridge is replaced.
The work is part of the $39 million project to add a third lane to I-70 in each direction and improve the interchange at I-435. It also will include the removal and replacement this winter of the Blue Ridge Cutoff (George Brett) Bridge over I-70, which will re-open by the Royals home opener.
