R-7 high schools capture nominations in Blue Star musical theatre awards

Lee’s Summit R-7 School District high schools continued their successful tradition in the Blue Star awards program, presented by Starlight Theatre and Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The program honors the best in high school musical theatre in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Schools earning nominations were announced May 6, and presentations were made in each school. This is the eighth year for the Blue Star program, and a total of 49 high schools are participating.

R-7 high school musicals presented this year include “Carousel” at Lee’s Summit High School, “West Side Story” at Lee’s Summit North High School and “A Chorus Line” at Lee’s Summit West High School.

All three Lee’s Summit R-7 high schools were nominated for Outstanding Overall Production. This is the first time any metro-area school district has had all its high school musicals nominated for this top award. In addition, all three R-7 high schools have a student who is nominated for the Rising Star Award, also a first.

Lee’s Summit West High School nominations include Outstanding Overall Production; Outstanding Actress in a Featured Role – Chloe Gibbs as Sheila; Outstanding Costume Design, Tier II; Outstanding Lighting Design; and Rising Star Male – Rob Glauz.

Lee’s Summit North High School nominations include Outstanding Overall Production; Outstanding Actress in a Featured Role – Casi Riegle as Anita; Outstanding Ensemble; Outstanding Costume Design, Tier II; Outstanding Lighting Design; and Rising Star Female – Claire Charland.

Lee’s Summit High School nominations include Outstanding Overall Production; Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role – Jamie Schlotzhauer as Julie Jordan; Outstanding Actress in a Featured Role – Olivia Lynn as Carrie Pipperidge; Outstanding Orchestra; Outstanding Ensemble; and Rising Star Female – Katelyn Baron.

The awards ceremony is open to the public and will be held at 8 p.m. May 27 at Starlight Theatre. The event is free although there is a fee for parking. Schools nominated for outstanding overall production, including LSHS, LSWHS and LSNHS, will perform numbers from their show at the event.
