Local Greenwood business helps to make the grade

The soccer field at the east end of Hitt Park in Greenwood has not been frequently utilized. Apparently the contractor hired to originally grade it did a poor job. The Dispatch was told that a recent survey revealed five different grade undulations on the field.
Greenwood’s cash flow problems are no secret, but the field issue needed to be resolved. Greenwood’s Park Board, headed by Dan VanSickle, decided to take action. Larry Miller, a Greenwood Parks employee, is a retired heavy equipment operator and has a long-time relationship spanning decades with Jim Kidwell, owner of Jim Kidwell Construction Company. Kidwell Construction’s headquarters is just south of Lake Winnebago on 291 South, but they list Greenwood, MO as their home, as it’s still a Greenwood address.
Miller contacted Kidwell, who agreed to take on the project for the cost of labor and gas. Greenwood saved equipment charges and profit which could have accrued up to $8,000, according to the number given to the Dispatch by Kidwell.
Kidwell also stated in the interview over the phone that he was happy to be in a position to help Greenwood out of a bind.
When a small town struggles financially, there’s potential for a lot whining, discontent, and protestations. It’s refreshing to see people roll up their sleeves and dig in to help.
There are more of these stories coming down the pipe and the Dispatch will continue to recognize extraordinary efforts from individuals and companies who help their local communities. If you know of any similar story, please contact the Dispatch so proper recognition can be given.
