The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District was recently awarded a total of $88,000 in grant funds from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act.

Both grants will fund heaters designed to be installed in the bus engines and used during the winter months. Through the purchase of the heaters, a total of 44 school buses will no longer need to be plugged into the electrical grid during winter nights, saving electricity and money. The heaters will be programmed to begin heating approximately one hour before the school bus routes begin, warming the coolant to the optimal temperature for diesel engines in time for the school day.

Diesel fuel usage and emissions will also be decreased due to the reduction in bus idling time.
