Lee’s Summit R-7 School District graduate survey reveals 85 percent of 2009 grads attending college

Follow-up survey also shows satisfaction with teachers and educational program

A total of 85 percent of Lee’s Summit R-7 School District spring 2009 graduates are currently enrolled in college, according to a six-month follow-up survey of students conducted last fall.

Of these, 51 percent were enrolled in a four-year university and 34 percent were enrolled in a two-year college.

The recent graduates were also asked questions about the education they received in Lee’s Summit R-7 schools. In the survey, 94 percent agreed that their teachers cared about them, and 87 percent stated that their teachers made learning interesting.

In terms of the schools’ academic programs, 91 percent agreed that they were held to high standards and 78 agreed that their course work was rigorous. A total of 96 percent agreed they had the ability to transition into post-secondary education.

Parents continue to provide the most valuable assistance to young people planning their future. A total of 60 percent indicated parents were their best help in making post high school plans. This was followed by 29 percent indicating that teachers and advisors provided the most help and 11 percent indicating counselors.

All Lee’s Summit R-7 high schools recently held graduation ceremonies with a total of 1,258 students graduating in spring 2010. Of these, 401 graduated from Lee’s Summit High School, 472 from Lee’s Summit North High School, 363 from Lee’s Summit West High School and 22 from Summit Ridge Academy, the district’s alternative secondary school.
