Twelve Lee’s Summit R-7 School District teachers receive Excellence In Teaching Awards

To be recognized at April 27 community reception
Twelve Lee’s Summit R-7 School District educators were recently named Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Excellence In Teaching Award winners. Recognized teachers are Kyle Anderson, Lee’s Summit North High School; Kerrie Creemer, Meadow Lane Elementary; Courtney Danner, Cedar Creek Elementary; Linda Driskill, Cedar Creek Elementary; Christie Eulinger, Summit Lakes Middle School; Greg Foreman, Highland Park Elementary; Kathy Graves, Lee’s Summit West High School; Bob Klausing, LSWHS; Vickie Metzler, Lee’s Summit High School; Deborah Parker, LSNHS; Sue Selby, Highland Park Elementary; and Kristen Wimberly, Longview Farm Elementary.
All 12 recipients will be honored at a reception and program scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 27 at the Stansberry Leadership Center, 301 NE Tudor Road. The reception is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the R-7 School District, and all students, parents and community members are invited to attend. At approximately 5:15 p.m., a brief program highlighting each of the 12 Excellence In Teaching Award winners will begin, followed by the surprise announcement of the 2010 Teacher of the Year.
The recognized teachers were selected by a committee composed of R-7 staff and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the community. Excellence In Teaching winners are also finalists for the R-7 Teacher of the Year program and will participate in an interview with the selection team.
In addition to the Excellence In Teaching Award winners, other finalists for 2010 Teacher of the Year include former Excellence In Teaching recipients who were nominated for the award again this year. These former winners interviewing for Teacher of the Year are Terri Beard, Richardson Elementary; Christy Beavers, SLMS; Cheryl McLaughlin, Hazel Grove Elementary; Lori Merrigan, Underwood Elementary; Pam Scott, Sunset Valley Elementary; and Keith Wingert, Meadow Lane Elementary.
Mr. Anderson has taught social studies at LSNHS since 2001 and is also the school’s ACT/PSAT college-entrance exam preparation coordinator. In addition, he serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Central Missouri.
Ms. Creemer teaches third grade at Meadow Lane Elementary School and has been a teacher for nine years. She co-founded the School Store, an after-school club to teach students about the retail and marketing aspects of running a business.
Ms. Danner is a fourth-grade teacher at Cedar Creek Elementary and has been an educator for six years. She co-sponsors her school’s Science Club and also helps students prepare for the Greater Kansas City Science Fair.
Ms. Driskill teaches fourth grade at Cedar Creek Elementary School and has been a teacher for 16 years. She partners with a national company to allow her school’s students to be published authors by producing hardbound classroom books featuring the children’s writing.
Ms. Eulinger is a library media specialist at Summit Lakes Middle School and has been an educator for 15 years. At SLMS, she has served as lead teacher, on the site-based team, the literacy team and has been facilitator for the technology team.
Greg Foreman is a music teacher at Highland Park Elementary School and has been teaching music since 1985. He is the author of five music resource books and has presented at a number of national music education conferences.
Ms. Graves is an art teacher at Lee’s Summit West High School and has taught art for 15 years. She sponsors the school’s National Art Honor Society, serves as a mentor for students at LSWHS and has been named Titan Teacher of the Month at her school.
Mr. Klausing teaches art at LSWHS and has taught within the R-7 School District for 20 years. He helped organize the National Art Honor Society and trapshooting club at LSWHS, sculpted the Titan sculpture at the high school and painted the mural in the wrestling room.
Ms. Metzler is a communication arts teacher at Lee’s Summit High School and has taught at LSHS since 2002. She is co-sponsor of the school’s National Honor Society, a team leader for the LSHS enrollment fair and communications mentor for the school’s robotics team.
Ms. Parker teaches German at Lee’s Summit North High School and has been an R-7 educator since 2002. She is a LSNHS Academic Achievement Awards coordinator, LSN diversity facilitator and sponsors the school’s German Club and Eco Club.
Ms. Selby teaches third grade at Highland Park Elementary and has been an educator since 1993. She is a member of the International Reading Association, is an R-7 literacy leader and is a member of the Highland Park Beautification Committee.
Ms. Wimberly teaches second grade at Longview Farm Elementary and has been teaching for 15 years. She is a member of her school’s Professional Learning Coaches Team, Longview Farm yearbook advisor and a co-leader for the school’s student ambassadors program.
