A progressive and personal touch to “Natural Parenting”

I (along with my wonderful wife, Jennifer) am a parent of two beautiful little girls. And although Emily (5) and Madilyn (11 months) aren’t the focus of my writing, they will be the driving force on me visiting businesses I otherwise may not have. One such place is Happybottomus (Twitter @Happybottomus), a “Natural Parenting” store.
Now, I consider myself an environmentally conscious individual. I drive a Prius. I have canvas shopping bags. I recycle. But I am by no means a Greenpeace, save the whales, tree-hugging hippy. So, when Madi, my youngest, was “in the oven” I decided to look into cloth diapering as an alternative to disposable diapers. I did some research online and couldn’t find any diaper services in the Greater KC area which was, to be honest, a bit relieving. I didn’t want to cloth diaper. I just felt obligated into looking into it as part of my environmental responsibility. Bullet dodged. Until one of my wifes pregnant friends pointed out Happybottomus located conveniently at 225 Southeast Douglas in Downtown Lee’s Summit.
Jen stopped in, just to get a feel for the place and found out that they offered a cloth diapering class every Saturday at noon. Wedecided to attend. Now, I’m not going to try to convince you one way or the other about cloth diapering but this class went a long way in making up our minds. The class is run by the store’s owner, Brookie-Lee Glaser (although the day we went, her husband, Kevin gave the class). They go over all the ends and outs of cloth diapering, from styles of diapers (It’s not all folding and safety pins anymore), to laundering, to all of your diapering questions and concerns. Brookie-Lee and Kevin know what they’re talking about. They have 3 “natural” children of their own.
Happybottomus offers many brands and styles of cloth diapers from prefold, safety pin jobs to All-In-One diapers that look just like disposables. Even if you don’t go to the class, they’ll be able to give you suggestions for your diapering needs. They sell any number of natural soaps to launder and maintain your diapers as well. Not to mention the stylish, organic clothing; baby carriers; shoes and toys. They even have “natural” personal hygiene solutions for women. Did I mention you can purchase most of these things from their website, which has a real-time inventory of everything they carry in the store?
With their convenient downtown storefront, their website chock full of information, and their friendly staff; Happybottomus is a store that fits the personality of our town. Progressive. Personable. Thoughtful. Wonderful.
