On Sunday, April 18, 2010, at 1:45 AM, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire in the area of Ranson Road and Bailey Road. Multiple 911 callers reported a large fire off of the road, not sure if it was a building or a brush pile.
Responding crews located the fire in a newly constructed storage building at the James A. Reed Wildlife Area, 13101 S. Ranson Road, in unincorporated Jackson County and Prairie Township Fire Protection District.
The entire building was heavily involved in fire. The Lee’s Summit Fire Department went to a defensive attack on fire while protecting nearby structures. Water tanker support was provided by the Prairie Township Fire Protection District, Lake Lotawanna Fire Protection District, and the South Metro Fire Protection District. The fire was under control at 2:47 AM. The Prairie Township Fire Protection District remained on scene to extinguish remaining hot spots.
The building is a total loss. The Missouri State Fire Marshal is investigating.
