Kara Garrett, a junior at Lee’s Summit West High School, participated in the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Legislative Shadowing Project during February Jefferson City.
Tours of the Governor’s Mansion and the Missouri State Capitol were provided on Feb. 23. An evening program at the Capitol Plaza Hotel was highlighted by a presentation by Rep. Mike Lair of Chillicothe. Kara spent most of the next day shadowing the Secretary of State Office at the Capitol to see the political process in action.
“It was great to be able to see the inner workings of our government. I’m very fortunate to be one of the 55 FCCLA members who get to take this experience with me for the rest of my life,” Kara said.
Missouri FCCLA sponsored the activity to give its members the opportunity to expand their capabilities in understanding and interpreting public policy focusing on family, work and social issues related to building strong communities. FCCLA is the only in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in activities such as the Legislative Shadowing Project helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.
Kara is the daughter of Mark and Gail Garrett of Lee’s Summit. She was accompanied on the trip by her chapter advisor, Pam Holstein. Pam Holstein is the family and consumer sciences teacher at Lee’s Summit West High School.
