Kansas City Kite Club president Sean Beaver is not shy about telling people to “Go fly a kite.”
On April 17, he and dozens of others from the Kansas City Kite Club will share their passion for unique and mesmerizing kites as they perform at the Fourth Annual Flights of Fancy Kite Festival.
Hosted by Metropolitan Community College-Longview in Lee’s Summit, the festival is expected to draw more than 10,000 kite lovers, fliers and aficionados from around the Metro area. Watch as Sean and his kite club take over the MCC-Longview lawn to launch some of most spectacular aerial displays.
Last year, with a strong wind and plenty of help, Sean and his crew were able to fly a kite that was as tall as a two-story house.
“It is always amazing to see some of these kites on the ground and then realize with just a little wind we can get them flying in no time,” Sean said.
As kites of all sizes and shapes fly over head, on the ground MCC-Longview will have free activities and games for kids. In one section, kids can make their own kite to fly there at the festival.
Vendors will be serving up some of the best barbeque and grilled favorites all day.
“This is such a fun day for MCC-Longview and everyone who comes to the festival as we showcase some of the great community members such as the KC Kite Club that we have in our community,” organizer Jill Ladas said.
The festival is also a chance for MCC-Longview’s Engineering and Automotive departments to show off some of the latest projects they have been working on this year in the field of Green and Wind Energy initiatives. The Automotive department will have its own solar and green energy cars on display along with the Engineering department’s homemade wind turbine.
Whether you are young or just young at heart, the Flights of Fancy kite festival will be a great excuse to get out and “go fly a kite”.
