Enter to WIN: Maggie’s Authentic Mexican Foods

When I started writing about our community a few weeks ago, I had a few Lee’s Summit Spots in mind that I wanted to write about. As I began to interact with other Lee’s Summit residents through Twitter (@lsspots), I noticed the buzz about places I’d not been to. Some of the loudest noise about a local spot was about Maggie’s Authentic Mexican Foods, located on 3rd Street, right across from the Kids at Heart Fountain. So while I was downtown for the Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Day Parade, I stopped in to scope the place out. As soon as I walked in and glanced at the menu, I knew I’d be coming back.

Maggie’s (named after Owner, Ryan Schnabel’s mother) could be the smallest restaurant in Lee’s Summit. A packed house (common) seats only 26, and that is by design. Not wanting the place to look empty (uncommon), Ryan likes the feel of a full house. Maggie’s hits capacity nearly everyday during the lunch rush and the dinner crowd grows everyday. They’ve added tables twice and will cram more in if necessary.

Ryan and his chef, Gerrardo are there Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday) around 8 AM to prep for the day. They have no recipe’s and make no measurements. They cook by instinct and taste. Maggie taught Ryan to cook this way and to ensure that they get it right every time, Ryan has worked with Gerrardo and taught him just as he learned it.  No recipe can teach taste and thats what makes Maggie’s food great.

Three for Five for Lunch

The chips are unlike any you’ve had because they use their flour tortillas instead of the standard corn tortillas. The enchiladas are made by hand every morning. Do NOT miss the Flour Shell Tacos. They have Mole and Pazole and Stuffed Jalapeno’s “On A Steek” (horrible comedian, btw); but what does the trick for me is the Pork Chili. Served in a bowl (w/ tortillas) or wrapped in a tortilla with rice to form the Pork Chili Burrito, you cannot go wrong with the Pork Chili. It’s chunks of tender pork thats been bathing in its flavorful broth (not too spicy) is the reason I keep going back.

Maggie’s runs a daily lunch special that will run you $5. Examples include 3 Flour Shell Tacos or  your choice of 2 enchiladas (beef chicken or cheese). On Tuesdays, they run the lunch special all day, making dinner at Maggie’s a steal. They also run dinner specials on occasion, but even without a “deal” you are going to get your moneys worth. There are 10 combos (all named after one of Ryan’s Aunts), that will let you try a little bit of a lot or get a combination platter to really get full. The bottom line is that I’ve yet to find a bad thing on the menu.

Need another reason to try Maggie’s? Well, I’ve got some incentive.  I want to make sure everyone who was following the blog made it over the The Green Summit Dispatch. Leave a comment below to enter for a chance to win a $20 Gift Certificate to Maggie’s Authentic Mexican Foods. If you’ve been there before, tell us what you like (or didn’t like) about it.
