Raymore Council expresses neutrality on school levy question

By seeking to remove itself from the Raymore-Peculiar School District levy increase debate, the Raymore City Council on Monday gave the topic center stage in an otherwise routine business meeting.
With one abstention, the council voted in favor of a resolution taking no position on the proposed 80-cent levy increase, which will go before school district voters on April 6.
Council member Jeff Adams, chairman of the Ray-Pec Citizens Opposed to Higher Taxes committee, which opposes the levy increase, abstained from voting. The seven remaining council members all voted in favor of the resolution.
But debate on the topic didn’t go smoothly, as Mayor Juan Alonzo cautioned Adams quickly when it appeared he might venture into the merits of the tax-increase question during his discussion of the resolution.
Though Adams said he would abstain from voting do to his personal involvement with the campaign against the levy question, “I don’t feel that (taking no position) is necessarily the best course of action for the city,” he said.
“The tax increase affects the well-being of our city,” from the standpoint of attracting business growth, he continued, before being abruptly stopped by Alonzo. [...]
