I have lived in Greenwood since January 2009, but have been a follower and admirer of the community for several years as many close friends live in the area.

I am married to Brooke Hanes Cover, originally from Raytown. We do not yet have any children.

My wife and I regularly attend St. Regis Catholic Church in Raytown. I am also a member of Elk’s Lodge #1034 in my hometown of Clinton, Missouri

Starwood Hotels (current), Hilton Hotels, Choice Hotels, Harry Cooper Supply Co.

I graduated from Clinton High School in Clinton, Missouri and from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management.

Q: Do you practice forgiveness in your every day life? How?
Absolutely, I’ve found finding the strength to forgive is crucial when trying to progress in life, both personally and professionally.
Q: How do you deal with personality conflicts or with conflict in general?
When I’m presented with a conflict, the first thing I do is make sure I correctly understand the situation before offering an opinion or taking action. I then try to help everyone else understand the situation. I believe many issues can be resolved if you can help each party understand where the other is coming from. As a manager, I work with many varied personalities and character backgrounds and have found that many times, developing a basic understanding of the issues for all parties involved can be the key to good conflict resolution.
Q: What are your professional qualifications for the office you seek?
I’ve held numerous management and leadership roles in my career. I currently manage a department with 125 associates. These leadership roles have required me to be extremely organized and allowed me to assist in solving complex problems that have a direct effect on people’s lives and livelihoods. I believe one of my most valuable skills is the ability to communicate with and motivate large, diverse groups of people. Additionally, I have frequently represented the Westin Crown Center Hotel in meetings, at events, and as a liaison for working with community leaders.
Q: What is your agenda/platform?
My plan for Greenwood is to expand on the progress made by the current City officials using innovative ideas and superior communication. The following briefly outlines my agenda for the next two years.
1) Assess all outstanding debt the City currently owes and develop a plan to stop excess spending on wasteful projects and unneeded ongoing expenses. Once we have “stopped the bleeding” we need to get back to the basics of running small town government and ensure the citizens that their everyday city services will no longer be in jeopardy.
2) Develop a plan to return the city to a business friendly environment. Greenwood is in a fantastic geographic position and has too much to offer to not have a thriving private sector. Reinvigorating the Greenwood Economic Development Corporation is must to ensure business prospects have a “front door” to our City. Developing a commercial tax base is important in maintaining and increasing the quality of life for Greenwood residents.
3) Expand on our park system and work to incorporate the Katy Trail into Greenwood’s future. Growing up in Clinton, Missouri I witnessed first-hand the advantages to having the Katy Trail and the positive effects it has had on that community. Assets such as the Katy Trail can quite literally put Greenwood on the map.
Q: What do you think the biggest challenge Greenwood faces is?
Like many communities, the biggest challenge facing Greenwood today is fiscal. This applies to the City itself as well as many of its citizens. To be effective, the next Ward I Alderman needs to have an overall understanding of the current economic environment and its effect on Greenwood. I’m fortunate to have such an understanding and hope to use it to Greenwood’s benefit.
Q: What do you think our city’s focus should be for the next two years?
Over the next two years, Greenwood’s focus should be on bringing a sense of fiscal responsibility to city government and attracting new businesses to facilitate job creation in the private sector.
Q: What are your top three priorities, goals to see accomplished if you are elected to office?
Q: Of those three priorities – what is your #1 priority for 2010?
Please see my agenda. In order of priority:
1) Balance budget and return Greenwood to a solvent town.
2) Increase Greenwood‘s commercial sector
3) Bring the Katy Trail to Greenwood and expand the park system
Q: Like the National Economy, our City economy has faltered; what plans do you have to make Greenwood thrive again?
As a new Board, we need to take a hard look at how much is currently being spent and where those dollars are going. Like any family in Greenwood, sacrifices must be made in these rough times to ensure needs are being met before wants. After cutting out unnecessary spending, we can then turn our focus to initiatives that will increase tax revenue to expand and create city services, programs, and projects.
Q: What tough budget decisions do you feel need to be made in order to keep Greenwood running on a positive budget with the income the city currently has (not counting the jury award of 11.9 million)?
I will decline to comment on possible budget cuts at this time, as I do not feel I have the necessary knowledge of the City’s current financials. However, it will be my top priority to become intimately familiar with Greenwood’s financial situation so I can express my thoughts on these tough budget decisions in a sensible and reasonable manner.
Q: What plans do you have to bring new business into Greenwood?
Redeveloping the GEDC is a great first step in marketing Greenwood to possible business interests. With our location as is, I would also like to see Greenwood work closer with our neighboring communities to bring new businesses to the area.
Q: What types of businesses would you like to see in Greenwood?
I believe in building on what works. Currently, Greenwood has one of the best antique and home décor sectors in the area. A downtown revitalization and beautification could really capitalize on what Greenwood is already known for so well.
Q: What plans do you have to make our city safer?
I believe the Greenwood Police Department does a fantastic job, however the safest cities are the ones who can afford security. I would make it a priority to get our police all the tools they need to make Greenwood the safest community it can be.
Q: What resolution would you like to see to the issue of the Quarry and its traffic and the use of our city streets?
As a Ward 1 Alderman I would work to find a swift resolution to this issue. Many of the details of the suit are out of our control now and I would suggest holding off on making too many plans until the courts have finalized their decision.
Q: What plans do you have to address the storm water issues our city is still facing or do you feel that the current plans are addressing those issues?
I believe the storm water issues are being dealt with and would push to continue all stages of the project. I have a good understanding of the drainage problems and have been participating in the town hall meetings with the engineers. The plans to correct these issues are sound, and focus now needs to turn to financing these well envisioned plans.
Q: What do you propose to do with the parking issue or parking ordinance here in Greenwood?
This issue needs to be looked into and feedback needs to be retained from residents before any ordinance is set. I would propose forming a committee with local residents and business owners to discuss the problems in an open meeting. This type of issue affects every town and city in America and I have faith we can come to a reasonable resolution as they did.
Q: What other improvements would you like to see in our community?
Once our finances are in order, I would like to see improvements to our interior city streets and believe the construction of a community center would benefit the town tremendously.
Q: Now that the appeals process is done and the city has been awarded the $11.9 million, what would you like to do with that money?
Once the awarded money clears all the hurdles and becomes free and clear to spend, it would then be appropriate to discuss plans for its usage.
Q: What is your opinion of the current political situation in Greenwood?
Greenwood has had its issues like many towns. I’m confident that with new leadership, we can usher in a new era of city government comprised of citizens who can keep an open mind and work together to overcome our current obstacles and move our community forward.
Q: What do you propose to improve the atmosphere at City Hall or how are you going to bring Greenwood together politically?
Open minds and civility towards one another is key and has been somewhat lacking. If elected, I’m sure I won’t agree with every opinion of my constituency, but I can guarantee they will always be treated with respect. Personal agendas and character attacks have no business in city government.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
I am small town guy who grew up in Clinton, was educated in Springfield, and settled down in the Kansas City area. Greenwood isn’t my past, but it is my future. It would be an honor to serve the people of this town as I begin my family in this community.
