Grand Opening of the HSI will showcase MCC’s dedication to quality health care education.

As the urgent need for healthcare workers increases, MCC-Kansas City is striving to fill that gap. Our new Health Science Institute (HSI) is now open, increasing MCC’s allied health and nursing student capacity by more than 300 in the first year alone.

The only facility of its kind in the region, HSI includes a Mayo Clinic modeled virtual hospital. With 12 human patient simulators, the lab contains a fully functioning operating room, emergency department, neonatal intensive care unit and patient rooms. There’s even an ambulance bay for EMS students to practice transitioning patients into the hospital.

In January, MCC-Longview automotive students and faculty re-designed and constructed an entire car (based on a used Saturn) that is now housed at the HSI. The vehicle will be used to train paramedics and emergency medical technicians to successfully handle vehicle accidents. A lifelike wireless simulator that mimics human injuries and medical needs is placed in the vehicle giving students a hands-on training experience when dealing with car crash victims.

“Having a car as part of the Health Science Institute supports the shift in instructional focus from rote lecture to experiential, hand-on learning,” said Sandy McIlnay, Director of Health Science at MCC-Penn Valley Health Science Institute.

Also, students in MCC-Longview’s Certified Nursing Assistant program will also spend time at the HSI taking classes and learning new skills to further their education.

Come see what the future of healthcare training looks like. Please join us for our grand opening, which will include tours of the facility, student stories, government and healthcare leaders, and a ribbon cutting ceremony. A demonstration of MCC-Longview’s automotive contribution will also be conducted by faculty and staff.

Previous recipients include: St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza, St. Luke’s Hospital-Smithville and The Kansas City Rehabilitation Institute. The vehicle was originally part of MCC-Longview’s General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program, which prepares students for careers with GM as service technicians.
