At 5:15 PM on Labor Day an alert LSPD patrol officer spotted a suspicious suitcase stationed near some utilities domes at Raintree Dr. and Northshore. He called it in and the bomb squad was dispatched to proceed with caution.

Sgt. Mike Childs was on the scene and the Dispatch used the opportunity to learn a little bit about the amazing piece of equipment made available by a Dept. of Homeland Security grant to the LSPD. The truck was purchased by the Federal Government and is made available to Lee’s Summit and some surrounding communities through Mutual Aid responses. LSPD staffs and maintains the truck and today was its third time out in the past 10 days.

img_59071Nearly three hours after the suitcase was discovered a fully suited bomb technician came walking back to the truck carrying the potentially dangerous package. Its contents? Privacy fence parts. Top caps. Plastic bags. Nothing explosive.

The video contains a few seconds of bomb squad technicians disassembling a robot for transport and finally the suspicious suitcase. If the case belongs to you, it could be retrieved at the Lee’s Summit Police Department.

UPDATE 9/7/09:  BY SGT. MICHAEL CHILDS, LSPD

Lee’s Summit, MO – Monday evening (09-07-09) at 5:15 p.m. an officer on patrol spotted a small suitcase wedged between two utility boxes on SW Raintree Drive near Breezy Point in a residential area. Unable to determine the contents and following safe protocol for a suspicious package the officer requested assistance from the department Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit. The road was blocked off and residents were asked to stay inside their homes or back away from the immediate area.

Upon arrival of EOD technicians the suitcase was examined and determined to pose no hazard or danger. The suitcase was opened and found to contain what could be considered trash. The scene was cleared at 8:15 p.m. and residential traffic was allowed to resume.
