Flashing Yellow Turn Arrows Point to Smoother Traffic in Raymore/Belton

Posted by GSDispatch Editor in by MoDOT, GSD Online

Flashing yellow left-turn arrows are being installed at several intersections on congested Route 58 in Belton and Raymore to improve traffic flow along one of the area’s busiest highways. Installation began Monday, Sept. 28, and will continue throughout the week.

The new flashing yellow arrows more effectively alert drivers to yield to oncoming traffic and moves through traffic more smoothly. Once all new signals are installed, a new traffic signal timing plan will be programmed to coordinate more than a dozen successive intersections from Raymore to Belton.
MoDOT is installing 17 flashing yellow left-turn arrows along Route 58 from Route Y to Clint/Dean Avenue. They are only for the eastbound and westbound left-turning movements on Route 58.

MoDOT is also installing a ‘LEFT TURN SIGNAL/YIELD ON FLASHING ARROW’ sign next to each of the left turn signal heads to inform motorists about the flashing yellow arrow. These replace previous signs that said ‘LEFT TURN YIELD ON GREEN.’

Once the flashing yellow arrows have been installed, the coordinated signal timing plan – developed by consulting engineering firm Olsson Associates – will begin. The coordination will specifically adapt traffic flow to accommodate the morning, lunch and evening peak congestion periods and should help traffic flow more smoothly throughout the entire Route 58 corridor.
