buatteLori Buatte, a teacher at Summit Lakes Middle School, is among six Kansas City metropolitan area teachers selected for a 12-day tour of Turkey during July. The trip is through the International Relations Council (IRC) in cooperation with the Turkish Cultural Foundation and the World Affairs Councils of America.

Mrs. Buatte, a seventh-grade eastern-hemisphere teacher, was selected from a highly competitive group of area educators. She plans to share her Turkey experience with her seventh graders, with her colleagues and with the Lee’s Summit R-7 community. This is the second year that the IRC has sent teachers to Turkey.

A Lee’s Summit resident, Mrs. Buatte has worked for the R-7 School District since 1990. She served as a sixth-grade teacher at Prairie View Elementary and has taught eastern hemisphere courses at Pleasant Lea Middle School and Summit Lakes Middle School.

Mrs. Buatte is also a varsity assistant softball coach at Lee’s Summit High School, head boys and girls track coach at Summit Lakes Middle School, lead social studies teacher at SLMS and a sponsor of the SLMS Falcon Smart program, which encourages students to make healthy choices and avoid substance abuse.

She has received the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Excellence In Teaching Award and the R-7 Learning for Life Award. Mrs. Buatte earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education and elementary education from Truman State University and her master’s degree in physical education, also from Truman State.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to see so many of the places that I have spent the last 15 years teaching,” she said. “Sharing this adventure with other staff members and the kids will be very fun.”
