Mid-Continent Public Library recently donated 2,000 plastic book bags to the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Summer Learning Institute. Each student participating in the program will receive a book bag from Mid-Continent as part of a “take-home” school library program.
Students involved in the new elementary program have the opportunity to take home a bag full of books from their school library during the summer. They will take the books home on July 2, the last day for the summer program, and return them to their home school when classes begin on Aug. 18.
Approximately 2,000 Lee’s Summit R-7 students from kindergarten through sixth grade are attending the Summer Learning Institute at six R-7 elementary school locations. The new elementary program is available for 2008-09 elementary students who were identified as children who could benefit from additional instruction during the summer.
Summer Learning Institute is part of the district’s emphasis on success for each child as part of a school-improvement initiative known as Professional Learning Communities. Summer Learning Institute lasts almost four weeks and began June 8.
