Guilty verdict in stolen monkeys saga

The Dispatch has closely followed the saga of Monkey Island’s stolen primates for nearly two years. Owner, Dana Savorelli has finally achieved some closure in the case with a recent guilty verdict against Lisa Shinkle of Buchanan County. Shinkle has been found guilty of receiving stolen property from Cathy M. Montes, a former volunteer worker at Monkey Island who is accused of taking three pigtailed macaque monkeys in the fall of 2007. Two of those monkeys were recovered from the Shinkle property while one remains at large.

Jackson County charges were dropped against Montes last year though the judge in the case did order her to pay restitution to Savorelli.

Shinkle’s husband, Michael Shinkle pleaded guilty to similar charges shortly after his wife’s guilty verdict. He’ll serve two years supervised probation as part of the plea. Lisa Shinkle’s sentencing is scheduled for mid-September.
