Applicants for open Greenwood Board of Alderman position announced

The Dispatch has obtained a list of applicants for the open Greenwood Board of Alderman position vacated when Denise Simpson resigned last month.
The list is in order of application receipt:
Phil Alvarado – withdrew 7/22
Sharon Hutinett
Marvin Megee
Al Reynolds
Marilyn Cooper
Tony Nunn
Darrell Grooms
Kirk Baldwin
The Dispatch was misinformed regarding the validation process for applicants in our last issue. We reported that the Mayor submits his choices from the list of applicants and that two of the three remaining aldermen must vote to accept the nomination. That meets the 66% criteria on the surface but it turns out that the open board position is still counted. So, two “yes’s” makes 50%. All three remaining aldermen must approve of the mayor’s nomination.
Many of the names on the above list will be familiar on the Greenwood political scene. Five of the applicants have either held office in the past or ran for election. Tony Nunn, Sharon Hutinett, and Darrell Grooms all ran and lost in the 2008 election. Phil Alvarado ran and was not elected this year. Alvarado reconsidered his application and withdrew Wednesday. Al Reynolds served on the board in the 90′s. Kirk Baldwin, Darrel Grooms, and Marilyn Cooper have all held positions on either the Planning and Zoning or Parks Boards this year. Baldwin and Grooms still participate in P&Z while Cooper resigned from the Park Board after the 2009 election.
From where I sit, there are two applicants who will merit serious consideration from the mayor and current aldermen. Grooms refuses to align himself with either side of the split board. Megee is not well known to the Dispatch and may be a darkhorse applicant. Reynolds, Hutinett, Cooper, Nunn, and Baldwin have all drawn lines in the sand in the past and could be construed as aligned with one side or the other. It would be a surprise to see Mayor DeCourcy nominate Nunn or Reynolds. On the flip side of that coin, Hutinett, Cooper, and Baldwin could be nominated by the mayor but will almost assuredly not earn the approval of at Aldermen Ring and Van Acker.
Despite the fact that Grooms is DeCourcy’s neighbor, the Dispatch believes he will warrant the strongest consideration from both sides.
Nominations and voting for the applicants could take place as early as the next BOA meeting which is Monday, July 27 but it has not yet been placed on the agenda.
