RED Development, LLC was voted recipient of a city loan up to $9,000,000 from the Lee’s Summit City Council on May 14th.  The council split votes 4-4 and Mayor Karen Messerli broke the tie in favor of the loan which will benefit the Summit Fair shopping center at 470 and 50 Highway.  The critical clarification for the package is that the money is not an overage or extra in any regard.  The project is within budget but RED’s financing fell through due to lenders’ more stringent policies in this economy.  The loan became controversial when the local union opposed the vote because of RED’s hiring of out-of-state, non-union laborers for the project.
